Automotive sustainability now extends from vehicle-use emissions to the complete material and component value chain. Electrification reduces tailpipe emissions but increases the strategic importance of battery production, critical raw materials, electricity carbon intensity, component footprints and end-of-life recovery. At the same time, conventional and electric vehicles share major impacts from steel, aluminium, plastics, tyres, electronics and logistics. Manufacturers and suppliers therefore need life-cycle data at vehicle, system and component level, supported by consistent supplier information that can feed Scope 3 inventories, product footprints and customer platforms.

Sustainability Priorities and Regulatory Landscape

The EU Battery Regulation (EU) 2023/1542 creates detailed sustainability, carbon-footprint, recycled-content, due-diligence and information requirements for batteries. From 18 February 2027, EV batteries, LMT batteries and industrial batteries above 2 kWh must have an electronic battery passport. In July 2026 the EU also adopted Regulation (EU) 2026/1738 on circularity requirements for vehicle design and management of end-of-life vehicles. The new framework introduces stronger design-for-circularity and producer-responsibility requirements and phases in recycled-plastic targets for new vehicles. CBAM is also relevant indirectly because steel and aluminium are covered sectors, affecting cost and embedded-emissions data across automotive supply chains.

Priority work therefore includes battery and component PCFs, full vehicle LCA, supplier Scope 3 data, recycled-content verification, circular design, material traceability and end-of-life scenarios. Electrification choices should be evaluated with use-phase electricity mixes, battery lifetime and replacement assumptions, charging losses and recycling pathways. For suppliers, customer-specific carbon-data requirements are becoming a commercial requirement as OEMs build more granular product-level emissions systems.
