Textile and apparel value chains combine agricultural, animal-based, chemical and industrial processes across multiple countries. Fibre production, spinning, weaving or knitting, dyeing, finishing, garment manufacture, logistics, consumer use and end-of-life each create different environmental impacts. Water, chemicals, energy, fibre origin, durability and waste are therefore all material, while fragmented supplier networks make traceability difficult. Sustainability performance increasingly depends on the ability to connect product design with verified value-chain data rather than relying on fibre-level assumptions or generic environmental claims.

Sustainability Priorities and Regulatory Landscape

Textiles and apparel are a priority product group in the ESPR 2025-2030 work programme, with product-specific ecodesign requirements under development. Once relevant delegated acts are adopted, these can introduce requirements relating to durability, reparability, recyclability, recycled content and Digital Product Passport information. The amended Waste Framework Directive (EU) 2025/1892 also establishes a harmonised basis for extended producer responsibility schemes for textiles, textile-related products and footwear, shifting more end-of-life responsibility to producers through national implementation. PPWR remains relevant for e-commerce and retail packaging, while REACH chemical restrictions continue to affect dyes, finishes and substances used in textile production.

Priority projects include fibre and material comparison, water and chemical management, renewable energy in wet processing, production-loss reduction, recycled content, durability, repair and resale models, and fibre-to-fibre recycling. Because recycled or bio-based fibres are not automatically lower-impact, LCA should test actual production routes, energy sources, quality loss and end-of-life assumptions. Supplier data is particularly important for Scope 3 and product-level footprints because upstream processes often dominate results.
