The "Repair or Replace" initiative promotes a circular and resource-efficient mindset by encouraging product and component repair over full replacement. The project helps companies reduce waste, emissions, and cost while shifting toward more sustainable maintenance and procurement models. It aligns environmental responsibility with operational efficiency through data-driven decision-making.

The challenge

In many industries, damaged products or components are often discarded and replaced — even when repair is feasible. This throwaway culture is not only wasteful but also carbon-intensive, especially for equipment with high embedded emissions such as electronics, industrial machinery, or transport assets. Companies face growing pressure to reduce scope 3 emissions and embrace circularity but often lack the systems or data to evaluate whether repair is truly the better option. Furthermore, traditional maintenance and procurement systems are rarely aligned with sustainability goals, leading to missed opportunities for cost and impact reduction.

Our solutions

The "Repair or Replace" framework introduces a structured approach to assess the environmental and financial impact of replacement versus repair scenarios. Through lifecycle-based data analysis and decision algorithms, the tool recommends the most sustainable option per case. Integrations with asset management systems allow for seamless implementation in existing workflows. The system also supports documentation for sustainability reporting, enabling transparency in product life extension strategies. Training modules and operational guidelines were also developed to support cultural change within procurement and maintenance teams.

Impacts of project

The project led to a measurable reduction in unnecessary replacements, cutting both procurement costs and emissions associated with new production. Participating companies reported a shift in internal culture — valuing longevity, resource efficiency, and carbon-conscious decision-making. The framework also supported reporting on circular economy KPIs and contributed directly to scope 3 emission reductions. More importantly, "Repair or Replace" helped position clients as leaders in responsible resource management, aligning operational practices with climate and circularity commitments.
