Defining Green for Product Labelling

Client
T.C. Ministry
Country
Türkiye

This project aimed to define environmental criteria for the Paint & Varnishes and Bathroom Fittings product groups within Turkey's environmental labelling system. An LCA (Life Cycle Assessment) study was conducted to understand the environmental impact stages of these sectors, considering Türkiye's specific realities. Data was collected from local manufacturers, and consultations with them were carried out to ensure accurate and relevant results. This collaboration was crucial for identifying the most impactful environmental stages and tailoring the criteria to local industry needs.

The challenge

The main challenge in this project was understanding the specific environmental realities of the Paint & Varnishes and Bathroom Fittings sectors in Türkiye. Identifying the most impactful stages of the production process required detailed analysis of local practices and supply chains. Additionally, gathering reliable data from local manufacturers, whose operations vary widely, presented logistical and coordination challenges. Ensuring that the environmental criteria were aligned with both global sustainability standards and Türkiye's unique industrial context added complexity to the process.

Our solutions

To overcome these challenges, we conducted a thorough Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) to map the environmental impact across each stage of production in both sectors. We worked closely with local manufacturers, collecting data and consulting with them throughout the process to ensure the criteria accurately reflect the realities of Turkish industry. This collaborative approach allowed us to tailor the environmental criteria specifically to local production processes while also ensuring they meet international sustainability expectations.

Impacts of project

The project successfully established environmental criteria for the Paint & Varnishes and Bathroom Fixtures sectors, integrating them into Türkiye's Environmental Labelling System. These criteria will drive more sustainable production practices in the industry, encouraging eco-friendly manufacturing processes. The collaboration with local manufacturers provided valuable insights into sector-specific challenges and needs, enabling more practical, feasible solutions. Ultimately, this project strengthens Türkiye's environmental labelling system and helps local industries align with global sustainability standards.
