E-commerce & Retail Industry
Retail and e-commerce companies influence environmental performance far beyond their own stores and warehouses.

E-commerce & Retail and the Sustainability Transition
Retail and e-commerce companies influence environmental performance far beyond their own stores and warehouses. Product assortment, procurement criteria, packaging, fulfilment models, last-mile delivery, returns and consumer information all shape impacts across the value chain. The sector's sustainability challenge is therefore largely one of scale and coordination: thousands of products and suppliers must be translated into consistent environmental data and practical purchasing decisions. As EU product rules increasingly require traceability and verifiable sustainability information, retailers are moving from broad supplier commitments toward product-level data, controlled environmental claims and measurable Scope 3 programmes.
02 / Sustainability Priorities & Regulation
Sustainability Priorities and Regulatory Landscape
PPWR now directly affects packaging placed on the EU market and increases the importance of packaging minimisation, recyclability, recycled content and reuse systems. ESPR creates product-specific ecodesign and Digital Product Passport requirements over time, and its DPP framework is designed to make relevant product information accessible before distance sales where delegated acts require a passport. The Right to Repair framework and consumer-information rules on durability and environmental claims also strengthen expectations for product longevity and credible communication. For assortments containing commodities covered by the EU Deforestation Regulation, due-diligence requirements will become relevant from 30 December 2026 for non-SME operators and from 30 June 2027 for micro and small operators under the current timeline.
Product and supplier data
Traceable sustainability information across large, changing product portfolios.
Packaging efficiency
Reduction, right-sizing, reuse and recyclability across fulfilment and returns.
Logistics emissions
Measurement and reduction of warehousing, delivery and returns impacts.
Circular business models
Repair, resale, take-back and longer product use supported by measurable outcomes.
Deforestation due diligence
Supply-chain controls for products and commodities exposed to EUDR requirements.
Claims governance
Evidence-based product and corporate claims across channels and markets.
Retail priorities therefore include supplier traceability, product and packaging data, sustainable procurement, returns reduction, repair and resale models, lower-emission fulfilment and substantiation of environmental claims. Scope 3 measurement is particularly important because purchased goods and services, upstream logistics and downstream distribution can dominate the footprint. Companies need category-level methods that are rigorous enough for decision-making but scalable across large portfolios.
03 / Metsims Support
How Metsims Can Support the E-commerce & Retail Sector
Metsims can support retailers and e-commerce companies with Scope 3 inventories, supplier-data programmes, sustainable procurement criteria, packaging assessments, LCA and PCF studies for priority product categories, and carbon scenarios for fulfilment and returns. Regulatory gap assessments can map which product groups are exposed to PPWR, ESPR/DPP, EUDR and other product-specific requirements, helping teams prioritise data collection rather than treating all SKUs identically.
Metsims can also design sustainability scorecards and digital data structures that connect supplier inputs with corporate reporting, product claims and decarbonisation targets. By combining portfolio screening with deeper product-level analysis where material, companies can focus resources on the categories and decisions that create the greatest environmental and compliance impact.
