Furniture products bring together wood, metals, plastics, textiles, foams, adhesives, coatings and hardware in long-lived products whose impacts depend strongly on material sourcing and product lifetime. Design choices determine not only manufacturing impacts but also whether a product can be repaired, refurbished, disassembled, reused or recycled. For manufacturers and brands, sustainability is therefore moving toward durability, material traceability, low-emission production and circular product architecture. Corporate buyers also increasingly request verified product data for green-building, procurement and Scope 3 programmes.

Sustainability Priorities and Regulatory Landscape
Furniture is explicitly prioritised under the ESPR 2025-2030 work programme, with product-specific measures planned for development. This means future ecodesign requirements may address durability, reparability, resource efficiency, recycled content and product information, potentially including Digital Product Passport requirements once relevant delegated acts are adopted. For timber and wood-derived materials, the EU Deforestation Regulation is another major consideration: under the current timeline, core due-diligence obligations apply from 30 December 2026 for non-micro/small operators and from 30 June 2027 for micro and small operators, where covered commodities and products fall within scope. PPWR also affects product and transport packaging.

Practical priorities include certified and traceable wood sourcing, reduced high-impact materials, recycled-content strategies, lower-VOC materials, efficient cutting and production, renewable energy, modularity, repairability and design for disassembly. Product LCA should consider realistic service life and refurbishment scenarios because extending lifetime can materially change annualised environmental performance. Material substitution should be tested for durability, sourcing and end-of-life trade-offs rather than evaluated on carbon alone.
