Logistics connects suppliers, factories, warehouses, ports, retailers and customers across global value chains. Its environmental footprint is driven by transport mode, distance, fuel and energy source, vehicle or vessel efficiency, loading rates, routing, refrigeration, warehousing and returns. Because logistics emissions often sit outside a company's direct operational boundary, reliable transport data is also critical to Scope 3 accounting and product footprints. Decarbonisation therefore requires both operational interventions - such as fleet efficiency and route optimisation - and better value-chain data capable of distinguishing actual transport activity from generic assumptions.

Sustainability Priorities and Regulatory Landscape
The EU regulatory landscape is increasingly differentiated by transport mode. FuelEU Maritime has applied since 1 January 2025 and limits the life-cycle greenhouse-gas intensity of energy used by large ships calling at EU ports. Maritime transport is also within the EU ETS, with methane and nitrous oxide included from 2026. ReFuelEU Aviation requires minimum sustainable aviation fuel shares, beginning at 2% from 2025. For road transport and fuel supply, ETS2 is being prepared for full operation in 2028; although obligations sit upstream with regulated fuel suppliers, the resulting carbon-price signal can affect logistics costs and fleet-transition economics.

Operational priorities include route and load optimisation, modal shift, fleet electrification, alternative fuels, renewable electricity, energy-efficient warehouses and improved cold-chain management. Companies also need granular activity data - tonne-kilometres, fuel use, transport mode, distance, payload and energy source - to calculate emissions consistently. The same information increasingly supports customer Scope 3 reporting, tender requirements and product carbon footprints, making data quality a commercial as well as environmental issue.
