Consumer durables such as household appliances, electrical and electronic products and long-life home equipment combine material-intensive manufacturing with years of energy use, maintenance and eventual end-of-life treatment. Their environmental profile can therefore shift substantially by product type: manufacturing may dominate for some electronics, while electricity consumption during use can remain the largest contributor for energy-intensive appliances. Durability, repairability, software support, spare-parts availability, material composition and recovery routes are increasingly relevant alongside energy efficiency. Sustainability in this sector is consequently moving from operational efficiency toward a broader product-system perspective in which design decisions determine both life-cycle impacts and the ability to keep products in use for longer.

Sustainability Priorities and Regulatory Landscape
The Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR), Regulation (EU) 2024/1781, expands the EU ecodesign framework beyond energy performance and creates the legal architecture for requirements on durability, reparability, resource efficiency, recycled content and product information, including Digital Product Passports where product-specific delegated acts require them. Energy-related products and ICT/electronics are included in the 2025-2030 ESPR work programme. The EU Right to Repair Directive, Directive (EU) 2024/1799, has also applied through national measures since 31 July 2026 for covered products, reinforcing access to repair and spare parts. Existing WEEE and energy-labelling requirements remain important for product design and market compliance.
